In a recent Forbes.com report of the world’s highest-paid athletes this past year, Manny Pacquiao ranked second with his US$62 million -- US$56 million from his two fights with Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley and US$6 million from his endorsements with Nike, Hewlett-Packard, Monster Energy and Hennessy.
According to a report written by Kurt Badenhausen of Forbes magazine, Pacquiao ranked only behind fellow boxer Floyd Mayweather who earned US$85 million but was ahead of the likes of golf superstar Tiger Woods (US$59.4 million), Lebron James of the Miami Heat (US$53 million), tennis great Roger Federer (US$52.7 million) and Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers (US$52.3 million), just to name a few.
If you’re already shaking your head with that info, wait ‘til you see how huge Pacquiao’s US$62 million is in the local currency.
At a modest rate of P42 to a dollar, US$62 million is roughly P2.6 billion. Which means Pacquiao earned this past year about P217-million a month. Or about P7.13-million a day. Or close to P300,000 an hour.
Let’s put it another way.
Pacquiao earned US$56 million for his two fights against Marquez and Bradley, both of which went the full 12 rounds, or a total of an hour and 12 minutes of work inside the ring.
That means Pacquiao earned P32.7 million pesos every minute he boxed in the ring. Or a little more than half a million pesos per second.
