KOREAN Kim Ga Young won the Yalin Women’s World 10-Ball Championships for the first time with a decisive 10-5 win over Siming Chen of China on Friday night at the Robinsons’ Galleria in Quezon City.
The Korean raced to a quick 5-1 lead thanks to a few run outs and well-placed safeties en route to her first-ever world 10-ball crown. Kim pocketed the US$20,000 top prize.
“When this tournament was introduced, I said to myself that I would like to win this crown,” said Kim in front of hundreds of fans who watched the final. “I haven’t won a 10-ball crown but finally, it happened.”
Kim set the stage for a Korea-China finals encounter after she defeated Jasmin Ouschan of Austria, 8-5, in the quarterfinals on Thursday night. Kim outplayed compatriot Yu Ram Cha, 9-5, on Friday afternoon to advance to the finals.
Chen downed fellow Chinese Fu Xiaofang, 9-6, in the semifinal round but fell short against Kim.
Confetti came down prematurely after Kim reached the hill, 9-3, to the amusement of the Filipino crowd. Chen won two more racks before Kim finally sealed the victory after Chen fouled while trying to sink the six ball.
