UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas' protest over its loss to Ateneo last weekend is in the hands of the UAAP board after the school formally submitted its appeal to the technical committee.
According to UAAP president Nilo Ocampo, the technical committee will meet on Thursday before the first game of a league doubleheader at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The meeting was later confirmed by National University athletic director Junel Baculi, the league's secretary-treasurer.
The Tigers have put their 66-68 loss to Ateneo on Sunday under protest over what head coach Pido Jarencio claimed were missed calls that changed the complexion of the game.
Commissioner Ato Badolato denied the protest saying the referees' decisions which UST is contesting are ‘judgement calls,’ forcing the school to elevate the matter to the technical committee.
Technical committee chair Fr. Ermito De Sagun of UST and member Ricky Palou of Ateneo are expected to inhibit themselves from the proceedings.
If the technical committee backs Badolato's decision, UST has the final option of elevating the case to the board which will rule on the issue en banc.
The Tigers claimed that Ateneo coach Norman Black should have been called a technical foul with 7.7 seconds left in the game for going to the opposite side of the court and complaining to the referees with UST holding a 66-65 lead after a jumper by Karim Abdul.
Later, the Cameroonian center blocked a shot of Ryan Buenafe who was fouled in the play with 5.1 seconds remaining. After a video review, Abdul was called for goaltending after the referees ruled the ball was on its way down when it was blocked, leading to the three-point play that proved to be the game's marginal points.
Jarencio has asked that the final 7.7 seconds be replayed due to the controversial non-call on Black.
