GLOBALPORT shooter Gary David's left knee, which caused him to miss six games in the PBA Philippine Cup, is feeling a lot better.
But it is David's troublesome left foot that is giving him second thoughts as Smart Gilas 2.0 begins its buildup for an international tournament on Friday under the supervision of coach Chot Reyes.
David said he wants to be part of the Smart Gilas 2.0 squad to the Dubai international tournament, but he intends to discuss his situation first with Reyes before making the next step.
“Pupunta naman ako sa Friday sa practice, pero magu-usap muna kami ni coach (Chot) tungkol sa paglalaro ko,” David told Spin.ph.
David said he’s stopped his foot therapy temporarily to take a break in Iloilo and be with Barako Bull’s Ronald Tubid and Air21’s Wynee Arboleda, whom he said are his closest friends in the pro league.
“Wala pa naman kasing balita sa Globalport eh, pero itong tuhod ko okay naman, yung paa ko na lang naman ang kailangan pa ng therapy. Natigil yung therapy ko pansamantala dahil nasa Iloilo ako," he said.
David, a standout of the Gilas team that won the Jones Cup and finished fourth in the Fiba-Asia Cup prior to the season, says his a midfoot arthritic injury on his left foot has yet to be fully healed and is causing discomfort.
“Dahil di pa totally okay, may nararamdaman ako sa paa ko. So papakiramdaman ko pa muna, pero sana makatulong ako sa Gilas. At kung makakalaro ako, gusto ko siyempre, yung wala na akong iniinda na injury,” said David.
The eight-year PBA veteran averaged 17.6 points and 2.2 rebounds in the Philippine Cup for the Batang Pier, who ended their first conference with 10 straight losses en route to a 1-13 record.
David vowed to keep himself in shape in the offseason in order to be come out with a more solid performance for the Commissioner’s Cup, which opens on February. 8.
