AFTER a long selection process, the University of the Philippines Maroons have decided to make no changes as far as the head-coaching job is concerned.
According to sources who asked not to be named, Rey Madrid beat out other contenders and got the nod of UP Chancellor Dr. Caesar A. Saloma to stay on as head coach of the lowly Maroons for the coming UAAP season.
Other details of Madrid's looming appointment were still unclear at posting time.
Sought for comment on Monday, UP College of Human Kinetics (CHK) officials declined to confirm Madrid's appointment but said that a decision will be made within this week.
The UP CHK also said they have already made a recommendation as to Maroons' the head-coaching to the Office of the Chancellor, which will have the final say on the matter.
They declined to name who the office has recommended for the position.
Aside from Madrid, a former player and head coach of the team during the 1990s, also considered for the position were UP juniors basketball coach Allan Gregorio, Big Chill head coach Robert Sison, and Jojo Villa.
Madrid, who was previously one of UP’s team manager, took over as interim head coach midway through last season after Ricky Dandan was fired from the job.
Madrid couldn’t salvage UP’s campaign as the Maroons went winless the entire campaign.
Still, Madrid got the nod over contenders who had vowed to bring in new backers for the Maroons, who have won a grand total of three games over the past four seasons.
Sources said Gregorio’s coaching bid got the support of telecommunications mogul Manny V. Pangilinan and Air21’s Bert Lina while Sison had also committed to bringing in the management group of Big Chill, owned by agricultural firm AgriNurture Inc.
A source bared Madrid will ask Gregorio to stay on as head coach of the juniors team.
