Lyceum’s NCAA men’s basketball campaign has turned from bad to worse as the school announced on Thursday that four players — three of them starters — will miss the remainder of the season due to academic problems.
Just when everyone thought their season couldn’t get any worse, the cellar-dwelling Pirates have suffered another blow as starters Chris Cayabyab, Rich Guevarra, Vence Laude, and sub Mark Francisco will sit out the squad’s last five games for failing their mid-term grades.
Cayabyab leads the team in scoring with 16.3 points, while Guevarra is third, averaging 10.2 markers.
Lyceum athletic director Hercules Callanta said the team dropped the players from the roster after discovering that Cayabyab, Guevarra, and Laude have not been attending their classes. Francisco has been present but still failed to pass his subjects.
“I cannot tolerate that,” Callanta said. “The message is that kahit mahirap ang mga subjects, basta pumapasok ang student sa klase.”
Starting power forward Arwin Azores will also miss the Pirates’ game versus Jose Rizal University later in the day as he serves a one-game suspension for his unsportsmanlike act in their meeting against Letran last week.
