MARK Caguioa and Gary David have high regard for each other, so much so that both concede anyone between them is deserving of the PBA Governors Cup Best Player of the Conference award.

Now the moment of truth is upon them.

On Wednesday night, the pro league toasts the best local player of the season-ending conference in a battle that has come down to the 'The Spark' and 'El Granada.'

The awarding ceremony takes place before Game Two of the Finals between B-Meg and Rain or Shine. Also to be named is the winner of the Best Import award, a race that has also narrowed down between the Elasto Painters’ Jamelle Cornley and the Llamados’ Marcus Blakely.

But all eyes are definitely on both Caguioa and David, the two high-scoring shooting guards who’s also hotly contesting the season MVP award.

Both have earlier acknowledged that they don’t have any problem if one of them brings home the BPC trophy, whose winner already has a very good shot at bagging the league’s highest individual honor.

Caguioa and David split the season’s first two BPC awards. The Powerade hotshot stood out during the Philippine Cup campaign, while the Ginebra gunner bagged the title during the Commissioner’s Cup.

“Hindi ko na iniisip yun,” said David on Monday while he watched the NCAA game between his alma mater Lyceum and San Sebastian. “Kung alam nilang deserving ako, mananalo ako.”

“I’m not really after that. I wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t get it. That’s not my goal. My goal is to win the championship,” Caguioa said as quoted by the Bulletin.

So far, David has the edge over Caguioa in the Statistical Points Standings (SPS), which comprises 40 percent of the criteria. At the end of the semifinals, David remained No. 1 with 33 SPS, despite the Tigers’ failure to advance past the eliminations, while behind him is Caguioa with 29.93 SPS as the Kings came a win short of booking the second Finals berth.

Others in the running include the B-Meg pair of Marc Pingris (27.69) and James Yap, and Rain or Shine’s Paul Lee (26.08), the only rookie player to crash the Top 10.
