RAIN or Shine import Wayne Chism said he went a perfect three-for-three in his pre-game checklist with coach Yeng Guiao following their serious heart to heart talk on Maundy Thursday.
The wide-bodied, 6-foot-8 import said Guiao gave him a three-point “sermon” prior to the team’s all-important game against Ginebra on Sunday, which involved playing strong defense, staying out of foul trouble, and being offensive-minded.
“Coach sat me down and talked about it and told me three keys, which is play defense, stay out of fouls, and be aggressive on the offensive end, which I did good tonight,” Chism said after leading the team to a 105-101 overtime victory over the Kings to end up as the No. 4 seed in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs.
The 25-year-old Jackson, Tennessee native bounced back strong by firing a PBA career-high 30 points, on top of 15 rebounds and five block shots against the Kings.
Chism came under fire before the Holy Week break after finishing with an anemic six-point performance in Rain or Shine’s narrow 87-82 win over Air21 last week.
The former Tennessee standout explained his low output against the Express had a lot to do with him being in foul trouble, which limited him to just 28 minutes.
Rain or Shine returns to action immediately on Monday when it faces No. 5 seed Meralco in the first game of the playoffs at 5:15 p.m.
Chism said he has no problem playing games on consecutive days, saying it simply brings back memories of his experience playing in the US NCAA.
“It (playing on Monday) sounded like NCAA tournament to me. I’m very used to it,” said Chism.
The Elasto Painters will have a walk through on Monday at 10 a.m., to prepare for Game One of their best-of-three quarterfinal match up against the Bolts.
