RICKY Dandan has submitted a letter of resignation as coach of University of the Philippines, formally ending his reign as head coach of the Diliman-based squad that lasted two-plus seasons.
Ronualdo Dizer, UP’s representative to the UAAP board, confirmed that Dandan has resigned from the post on Monday. He added that the school accepted his resignation.
The Maroons only won three games under Dandan since taking over in 2011. The Diliman-based cagers have yet to win eight games into their campaign this season.
But at least, Dandan went out on his own terms.
Dandan was fired by the alumni association on Saturday, sources said, but appeared set to keep his job after school officials insisted that no changes had been made to the team as far as they were concerned.
Another source said the UP Chancellor was supposed to issue a statement on Monday to stand behind the coach - a plan that was shelved after Dandan filed a resignation letter on Monday morning.
Team manager Rey Madrid, sources said, is set to take over the head-coaching chores of the Maroons. He has also began running the Maroons’ practices since Saturday
But Dizer said nothing is final at the moment, although he admitted that Madrid is the one being considered.
“We are considering Rey Madrid as of this time,” said Dizer.
Dizer said Dandan's replacement will be announced on Tuesday, a day before the Maroons play their next game against the University of the East on Wednesday.
Madrid was a former player and teammate of Dandan at UP in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He will reportedly be joined by PBA technical staff head Ramil Cruz and Edward ‘Poch’ Juinio as assistants.
