B-MEG endured an amazing Powerade comeback to pull off a 110-98 overtime win and barged into the semifinals of the PBA Governors Cup Saturday night at the Ibalong Centrum For Recreation in Legazpi City, Albay.
Import Marqus Blakely and James Yap came through when the Llamados needed them most, scoring six straight baskets in the extra period for a 96-92 lead which B-Meg never relinquished.
Regulation ended at 90-all after Gary David sank a huge three-pointer off the backboard with 1.2 seconds left. Blakely failed to put up a shot as time expired in the last Phoenix road tour game for the season.
Blakely finished with 31 points and Yap, the two-time league Most Valuable Player (MVP) added 24 for the Llamados, who capped their elimination round campaign with a 6-3 record and joined Rain or Shine, Talk `N Text, Barangay Ginebra, and defending champion Petron.
“We went into that overtime with a real emotional downer that we thought we had the game won, then David hit that three-pointer off backboard,” said B-Meg coach Tim Cone.
“The key was our guys turning around mentally and still going out….I told them before the start of overtime, it’s the test of our character now, so they have to prove themselves.”
David led the Tigers with 34 points. His two free throws with 1:07 to go in overtime had Powerade threatening for the last time, 103-98, before a basket by Blakely and a split by Peter June Simon clinched it for the Llamados, 106-98.
The Tigers fell to 4-5 overall and now would be rooting for a Barako Bull victory over Meralco on Sunday to forge a three-way tie for the last semifinals berth.
