SMART Gilas proved too much for Macau, scoring a 98-46 victory in the Fiba Asia Cup on Monday in Tokyo, Japan.
Jeff Chan led the Philippines with 18, while Gary David and JayR Reyes had 12 apiece.
Matt Rosser had a huge day with a near triple double with 11 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, while Jared Dillinger also had 11 points.
"Matt Rosser continues to impress," tweeted a fan, which Gabe Norwood reposted on his account @GNorwood5. "Kid's like @GNorwood5 on a sugar high."
It was the team's third straight win after an opening day loss to China.
After what looked like a light workout with Macau, coach Chot Reyes announced via Twitter that the team was headed "straight to hard practice."
"Straight to hard practice after Macau game. This is how we roll," he tweeted on his account @coachot.
The Filipinos shot 41-of-67 from the field to Macau’s 20-of-69. Gilas also shared the ball well, as evidenced by their 24 assists to Macau’s eight.
Chan set the tone early by hitting three triples en route to scoring 13 of the team’s 33 points in the first quarter. Larry Fonacier also contributed six straight points in the opening canto – all on jumpers – to extend the lead.
David, the reigning PBA scoring champ, outscored the entire Macau side, 10-8, in less than six minutes of action in the third quarter. He got to the basket at will for easy layups and hit two free throws in that impressive stretch.
Only three Gilas players saw more than 20 minutes of action while naturalized center Marcus Douthit sat out the game.
Fu In Lao led Macau with 14 points, while Tong Fai Cheong added 12.
