The Generals have finished at the bottom of the pile the past two years, and there is little reason to believe their campaign would be any better this season.
They were the second-worst offensive team last season with a 68.7-point per game and could be more hard-pressed scouring for points this year after losing three of their top four scorers last season in Claude Cubo (11.7 points), Joshua Torralba (10.4), and Milan Vargas (8.5).
Jan Jamon, last season’s leading scorer, was unimpressive in the preseason. Highly touted recruit Igee King has only shown flashes of his potential. And veteran Russell Yaya has yet to embrace his role as leader as he has been a model of inconsistency under coach Gerry Esplana.
Although they have brought in experience and backcourt depth with guards John Tayongtong (a former Arellano Chief), returnee Nikki Monteclaro and Francis Munsayac (a member of the three-peat San Beda Red Cubs team), the Generals do not appear to have enough talent to contend.
One rare bright note was the addition of Noube Happi, a 6-foot-7 Cameroonian who was a double-double machine in the Filoil Flying V preseason tournament.
But he and his teammates have a tough task ahead in trying to save the Generals from another losing season.
