The Philippine national baseball team sets its sight on the upcoming Asia Cup this July, a qualifier to the Asian Championship set later this year, after clinching a gold medal in the PSC-POC National Games.
National head coach Egay Delos Reyes said that preparations for the tournament are right on target following their conquest of the PNG, their first tournament since their gold medal victory in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games.
“After ng PNG, nakita ko na kailangan pa namin ng hitting. Pero acceptable pa naman ngayon kasi, at this point, we are still focusing on pitching and strengthening. We will soon start sa skills and situations. I can say na nasa 65 to 70 percent na kami,” said Delos Reyes.
The Asia Cup is set on July 19 to 28 in Thailand where they will compete against Pakistan, North Korea and several other Southeast Asian countries.
“Mataas naman ang chance namin basta tuloy ang kundisyon ng mga players, walang injury at ‘wag kami masyado ulanin dahil everyday naman kami nagpa-practice,” Delos Reyes added.
The champion team in the Asia Cup will claim a spot in the 2012 Asian Baseball Championship set December where Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei and China are already seeded.
The PH batters leaned on pitchers Jon Jon Robles and Charlie Labrador to grab the PNG gold via a 12-2 thumping of the PH youth team.
