About time: taekwondo nationals to be aided by electronic scoring

National taekwondo tournament to be aided by electronic scoring at last
Jul 27, 2012

FOR the first time, scoring in a local taekwondo tournament will be fully aided by an electronic scoring device.

The National Open Taekwondo Championships will be held this weekend at the Makati Coliseum with the event using the same electronic scoring system that is being used in international tournaments worldwide including the London Olympics.

Rocky Samson, Philippine Taekwondo Association technical committee head, said all eight competition mats will be aided with an electric armor and a video set-up which will be used for scoring.

“We were able to have this new, hi-tech equipment,” said Samson in Friday’s SCOOP weekly forum. “Ito na rin ang ginagamit sa ibang bansa kaya ang ating national tournament ay at-par na sa international standards."

Initially, the electronic armors were only used by the national team but Samson said they were able to acquire the new electronic scoring system for P5 million with the help of the Philippine Sports Commission.

The electronic scoring system is intended to reduce controversial results during bouts.

All matches will also be recorded and the video can be used to verify a score.

“Anytime na may questionable score, puwedeng magtanong ang coach to request for a video replay. There will be a video jury which will decide whether valid ‘yung concern,” said Samson.

One hundred sixty-five teams from all over the country will participate in the national open.
