FIL-American Stanley Pringle and Evan Brock hit crucial shots down the stretch as the Indonesia Warriors stunned the San Miguel Beermen, 78-76, on Saturday to win the Asean Basketball League crown in front of a raucous crowd at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Pringle scored a game-high 28 points while Brock added 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Warriors. They combined for Indonesia's final seven points to stave off a searing San Miguel comeback in the fourth.
It was a disappointing defeat by the Beermen, who needed a big rally in the payoff period after trailing by as much as 12 points in the third.
The Indonesia Warriors/Satria Muda Britama franchise finally won after two futile tries. The Philippine Patriots won the maiden season and the Chang Thailand Slammers emerged champions last year.
“We’re ecstatic because we know how great the Beermen are... and doing it in front of a hostile crowd,” said Indonesia Warriors head coach Todd Purves. “I’m just overwhelmed with pride for my players.”
Purves, named Best Coach of the Year, credited the Beermen for making the title run tough for them.
“I want to congratulate the Beermen for a great season. Definitely, they're the best team we have faced this season,” said Purves.
After trailing 59-71, the Beermen scored 10 straight including a follow-up by Junmar Fajardo after grabbing Chris Banchero’s missed bonus free throws to cut the deficit to two, 71-69, with 2:34 to play.
But Pringle answered quickly, converting a three-point play after a strong drive to the basket to up the Warriors’ lead to 74-69.
Brock hit four free throws, including a pair that made it 78-74 with 29.8 seconds on the clock.
Duke Crews scored on lay-up to cut the deficit to two points. Leo Avenido, the season Most Valuable Player (MVP), had a chance to tie but missed a tough lay-up. After Brock missed both free throws with 1.6 seconds left, Nick Fazekas’ long heave didn’t even come close to the rim as the buzzer sounded, sparking a huge Warriors celebration at midcourt.
