PHILIPPINE Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco has suggested to incoming Philippine Sports Commission officials to consider Davao as possible host of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Cojuangco made the suggestion to returning PSC chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez on Wednesday night when the two officials discussed how they can work together to uplift Philippine sports.
Cojuangco related to Ramirez that Davao Del Norte local officials have been wanting to host major sports events ever since the province staged the 2015 Palarong Pambansa.
And with President Rodrigo Duterte also a proud Dabawenyo, the possibility of hosting international sports events in the province and in nearby Davao City could become a reality.
“Wala pang agreement. Ideas have been thrown around. But I was suggesting kasi ever since nag-host ang Davao Del Norte (ng Palarong Pambansa), they were saying na nakapag-host na sila ng Palaro and other events, baka puwedeng sila naman mag-host ng SEA Games. Sabi ko puwede sana basta may facilities,” said Cojuangco.
“But now with the new President coming from Davao, we can have hosting in Davao Del Norte and Davao City para kumpleto na,” he added.
In the meeting, Cojuangco has also invited Ramirez to join in POC activities, as well as attend the Southeast Asian Games Federation council meeting next month.
