BANTAMWEIGHT Mario Fernandez missed out on capturing an Olympic berth via the Asia/Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament after he lost to Kairat Yeraliyev of Kazakhstan via unanimous decision on Friday in Qian’an, China.
All three judges gave the bout to Yeraliyev as all scored the fight, 30-27, in favor of the Kazakh fighter.
Fernandez, a Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, was relegated to a box-off for an Olympic spot after bowing to Chatchai Butdee of Thailand in the semifinal round.
The finalists and the winner of the box-off between losing semifinalists in the Asia/Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament advanced to Rio De Janeiro.
