NONITO Donaire lost a unaninous 12-round decision to Jessie Magdaleno to yield his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight title on Sunday at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
It was an action filled-fight that appeared too close to call, but the three judges saw it otherwise.
Scores were 116-112, 116-112, and 118'-110, all for Magdaleno, the last card meaning Donaire only won two rounds in one of the judges' eyes.
An obviously disappointed and puzzled Donaire went to the judges' table shortly after Magdaleno was declared the winner.
Donaire, now 37-4, with 24 KOs, later admitted he didn’t thought about losing the fight against the still unbeaten Magdaleno (24-0, 17 KOs).
“Losing never crossed my mind,” said the ‘Filipino Flash’ following the loss in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Jessie Vargas title match for the WBO welterweight championship.
The 33-year-old Donaire later said he’ll bounced back from his first loss in two years, or since being TKO’d by Nicholas Walters in their World Boxing Association (WBA) super-featherweight championship match.
“Thank you for giving all your love and energy, but apparently, the judges saw it differently,” he said. “It doesn’t matter. It was yesterday and I’m going to celebrate life with the thousands who chanted for me.
“Tomorrow brings another day and we learn.”
