Arwind Santos drives around in Ford Mustang GT, yet never forgets where he came from

HE has all the awards and material possessions anyone can ask for, but PBA star Arwind Santos makes sure to stay grounded.

That’s what his grey 2014 Ford Mustang GT reminds him of.

Recently involved in a minor accident while aboard the sleek car, the San Miguel Beer star said it was but a reminder that everything can be taken away from you in a flash.

“Lahat ng yan, bigay ng Diyos yan,” Santos, who used to drive a pedicab in his native Lubao in Pampanga, said in a chat with SPIN.ph after practice. “Anytime, pwede yan mawala, kaya yung mga ganyan, dapat you know pa rin yung priority.”

“Pag nakakakita ng mga ganyang (sasakyan), yung mga nabili mo, nabibigay sa’yo, nakaka-proud and then you feel blessed talaga,” the six-time PBA champion and former league MVP added.

“Pero kailangan lang huwag mong dadalhin sa utak mo na kala mo sino ka na, hindi ka na marunong tumingin sa pinanggalingan mo, makakalimot ka na.”

Santos, 36, related his sports car was a gift from wedding godfather Dennis Villa-Ignacio four years ago.

“Siya yung talagang idol ka na maliban sa buhay-buhay, sa business suggestions, opinion,” the former Far Eastern University star said. “Malaki utang ng loob ko sa kanya.”

Santos usually drives his other sports car, a neon green Hyundai Veloster, but turns to his GT from time to time.

“Kadalasan pag may date kaming mag-asawa, at dito sa practice minsan pagka-ayaw kong mabugbog yung isa ko,” Santos said. “Kailangan gamitin mo siya (GT) every week.”

And despite using it only occasionally, the American sedan still runs smoothly.

“Oo naman, lahat naman, basta may gasolina, maganda takbo. Mahirap dyan, ang ganda ng sasakyan mo, walang gasolina, hindi tatakbo yan,” Santos said with a laugh.

Whatever car he drives, Santos never forgets where he came from.

“Yan ay isang pagsubok na – tandaan mo, kahit sobrang taas mo na, kailangan yung paa mo, nakasayad pa rin lupa,” the former PBA MVP said. “Marunong ka pa rin kung saan ka nanggaling.”
