Van Opstal savors fresh start with GlobalPort armed with lessons from short, rich SMB stint

ARNOLD Van Opstal’s stay with San Miguel Beer, where he was buried at the end of the bench in his first two conferences as a pro, may have been short but he considered it a rich learning experience even as he now looks forward to his fresh start at GlobalPort.

The rookie big man insisted he gained experience by playing with June Mar Fajardo and the rest of their big men, as well as witnessing what make leaders Chris Ross and Alex Cabagnot tick as he cherished his short stint on a team he labeled as an all-time great.

“It’s easy to say that I didn’t (gain anything) because I didn’t play, but I definitely believe that I gained something, especially when it comes to how the vets lead the team,” Van Opstal said. “We’re possibly the best team in PBA history that I was on, and to see the leadership that Chris Ross brings, that Alex Cabagnot brings, when I’m older, that’s what I want to be doing.”

“When I get the chance, I know how to lead a team – thanks to them, because I can look up to them and say, ‘hey, that’s what they did,’” he added.
