Pain no barrier as Calvin Abueva rises from bad fall to put final touches to Alaska win

CALVIN Abueva was left grimacing in pain after landing on his left wrist at the end of a completed fastbreak play in the dying moments of Alaska's overtime win over Star in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday.

"Huling bagsak ko yung wrist ko natukod ko, kaya medyo masakit," Abueva said later.

The pain, however, didn't prove to be a problem as Abueva capped a 23-point, nine-rebound game with that fastbreak basket off a JVee Casio outlet pass that sealed a 97-90 win over the Hotshots.

Abueva, however, pointed out that he didn't carry the team alone after getting plenty of help from his frontcourt partner Vic Manuel, who topscored for the Aces with 25 points.

Although the victory - their fourth in seven games - gave the Aces a share of the third spot with GlobalPort and TNT, Abueva said they have to keep their feet on the gas to stay in the hunt for a place in the top two.

"Marami pa kamin makakalaban kaya di pa pwedeng mag-relax. Kailangan naming pumukpok kahit malayo pa 'yung game namin sa susunod," he said.

"Goal namin talagang makuha, may chance pa rin sa top two. Goal namin makapasok sa playoffs."
