CHANGSHA, China – Dondon Hontiveros admitted he has yet to get into a good rhythm a week and six games into the Fiba Asia Championship that is now on its final three days of competition.
But that doesn’t discouraged the Gilas captain, more so now when the Philippines enters the most crucial stage of its campaign to grab the lone Asian berth to the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.
“I just stay focused, stay confident,” said the leader of the all-pro team.
Through the preliminary rounds, the Cebuano shooting guard only averages 6.2 points and 2.2 rebounds, shooting 37.9 percent from the three-point zone and 38.2 percent overall from the field.
“Yeah, may games na maganda, may games na struggle din,” he confessed. “Pero binibigyan naman kami ni coach ng opportunity na maka-recover.”
“Kaya nga even if you missed the first shot, stay confident ka pa rin sa second shot. Get some rhythm.”

Just like any battle-tested player, the 38-year-old Alaska shooting guard is keeping the faith and believes he’s due for a breakout game.
“Nandito na kami and we just have to stay ready, stay composed, and stay confident,” Hontiveros said. “It’s for us guys to really step up and stay disciplined.”
