CEU Scorpions, Diliman College Blue Dragons score big wins to keep share of lead in UCBL
CEU’s Ebuka Umeanozie and Louis Baconcon go up for a rebound against UB led by Cameroonian import Raoul Yemeli.

DEFENDING champion Centro Escolar University and Diliman College scored contrasting wins on Thursday to stay on top of the Universities and Colleges Basketball League Season 2 at the Olivarez College gym in Parañaque City.

The CEU Scorpions redeemed themselves from a shock 59-56 loss to the Diliman Blue Dragons with an 87-46 drubbing of the slumping University of Batangas Brahmans.

Judel Fuentes led CEU’s mighty assault, firing 9 of his 17 points in the opening period while five other teammates added at least eight points each.

“We really wanted to bounce back and I’m proud of how my players responded to the challenge,” said CEU coach Yong Garcia.

The Diliman Blue Dragons got another solid performance from Senegalese big man Adama Diakhite to outlast the Bulacan State University Gold Gears, 79-70.

The 6-foot-9 Diakhite proved too much for the Gold Gears frontline as he finished with a triple-double of 18 points, 25 rebounds and 11 blocks while local guard Rickson Gerero scattered a team-high 22 points for the Blue Dragons.

Diliman’s win extended its streak to five games for an overall record of 7-1, the same record of the Scorpions, who held the Brahmans to several scoring droughts.

CEU’s sticky defense forced UB to commit 23 turnovers and transformed those into 30 points while leading by as many as 53.
