San Beda's best players out of Palaro title defense after officials stick to under-18 age limit

SAN Beda sees a difficult road in its defense of the Palarong Pambansa high school basketball title in San Jose, Antique.

San Beda coach JB Sison said the Red Cubs will not have the bulk of its NCAA team since the likes of Evan Nelle, Sam Abu Hijle, and Germy Mahinay are already past the age limit for this year's Palaro.

Sison said he expected the age limit to increase from 18 to 19 due to the implementation of the K-12 but the Department of Education stuck with the under-18 rule this year.

“’Yung chances namin ngayon, medyo slim. Ine-expect ko na maglalaro sila this year dahil sa K-12, pero hindi nag-adjust, sabi nila, next year pa raw,” said Sison.

Only four players from the NCAA squad led by Joshua Tagala will be with the San Beda Calabarzon squad. The other Team A players are Mark Lagumen, Luke Sese, and Lian Barbero while rest are members of the Red Cubs’ Team B.

Tagala was the second leading scorer of San Beda in the NCAA Season 92 eliminations with an average of 11.1 points.

“Laban pa rin kami,” said Sison.

The Red Cubs are facing tough opposition from National Capital Region as the Big City bets are comprised of players from Adamson and Chiang Kai Shek College led by the Blue Dragons’ top player Jonas Tibayan.

Central Luzon is also expected to be a title contender as they finished second to San Beda last year in Legazpi.
