BATANG Gilas trimmed a 10-point deficit to a hairline, but South Korea managed to hold them off, 77-74, on Monday in the Fiba Asia Under-16 Championship at the Arena Britana in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Philippines got to within 72-73 with a little over two minutes left on a Jonas Tibayan shot, but Korea was quick to recover with HyunJung Lee draining a triple to extend the lead and push his squad to victory.

It was the first loss for Batang Gilas, who won their previous matches by an average of 19.

Gian Mamuyac topscored for the Philippines with 18 points, while ibayan finished with 17.

Kris Havey Pagsanjan had 15 points for Batang Gilas and skipper Samjosef Belangel had 11.

The Philipines beat Iraq, 78-69, on Sunday in its first match of the second round. Batang Gilas takes on China next.
